PETER LUCAS ERIXON: LAST REMNANTS OF THE WILD: Meditations and Exercises
"It is a rare pleasure to read the work of a poet who can use language and metaphor as well as Peter Lucas Erixon."
Jeanette Lee Atkinson, World Literature Today
Peter Lucas Erixon, born in Sweden 1962, is a Swedish writer who, during the last seventeen years, continously spent time in New York City and in his own way made it his second home. He gave his first own reading in NYC in January 2007 and on New Years Day 2008 he was invited to participate in the prestigious 34th Annual New Years Day Reading in St. Marks Poetry Project, Manhattan, where he read from the same stage as Patti Smith, Philip Glass and Steve Earle, among many other performers and poets. In late April 2008 a collection of short prose was published in English as Last remnants of the Wild: Meditations and Practises. It's the first work of Peter Lucas Erixon that's being published in translation. The author says it's a completely new step to have the possibility to be read in English and looks forward to whatever may come out of this project in the long run.
Erixon made his debute in 1983, then twenty one years of age, with a collection of poetry. After two more books of poetry and an appreciated book of short stories at the end of the 80's, he made a definitive transition to prose in 1989. His work so far includes eleven books, of which the two most recent novels are Röster och brus (Voices and Static, 2000) and Stoft och vind (Dust and Breeze, 2007) that both take place in New York City and show not only a depth in knowledge in a broad variety of things but also great depth in the urban feeling expressed in strong, artful and elegant prose. Dust and Breeze was welcomed by several very well known and respected Swedish critics as maybe Erixon's best literary work so far.
Last Remnants of the Wild contains twenty two prose texts, or prose poems (although the author himself denies that it is poetry and doesn't want to be known as a poet since he left that field). Despite the urban feeling in the two most recent novels, the delicate texts in his new book have the great Nature as a background to deep and mystical experiences.
In many ways Last Remnants of the Wild summerizes much of what from the very start has been a part of Peter Lucas Erixon's work. The texts in this book are truly sublime and carry the reader through a mystically illuminated landscape. This book has been in progress for close to two decades, during which time the author wrote several other books.
Peter Lucas Erixon is counted as an important voice in his literary generation in his home country, appreciated by loyal readers who appreciate how his work combines spiritually strong visions with intense presence and gravity. He is looked upon as a literay solitaire, respected for his consequence and unusually broad and rich imagination. His preferences go from the iconography of modern rock music to philosophical-existential questions.
Erixon has recently done two very personal and appreciated interviews (published in Sweden as well as Great Britain, and on internet sites) with poet and singer Patti Smith, to whom Erixon has dedicated this new book. He is now working on a future collection of interviews with Smith.
Erixon is the father of two grown up children, Rebecka and Tor, and resides in Sweden when he's not traveling.
Last Remnants of the Wild is translated from Swedish by Lars and Louise Danielsson in close co-operation with the author.
